Thing 30- Thoughts on Learning 2.0

I actually took away more knowledge about the resources introduced in this program than I thought I would. I ended up knowing more about some things I had previous knowledge of, such as YouTube and image generators. The only issue that I had with this program was the time of year in which it started. Next time, try having the program start in the middle of the year instead of near the end. If there was another program like this offered, I would choose to participate again, in order to enhance my work environment and find out about exciting new concepts.

Thing 29- My Learning 2.0 Experience

My favorite exercises in this program were Thing 26 with the image generator and Thing 23, which involved YouTube videos. This program has helped me find innovative ways to express myself online and I now know extra ways to quickly find my favorite websites.

Thing 28- Rollyo searches

In this thing, I created a Rollyo search profile. I can see groups using this to share information.

Thing 27- Librarything

I found a lot of favorite books on Librarything.com. Here are 5 of my favorites:

Thing 27- LibraryThing

I found a lot of great books on LibraryThing. It lets you find your favorite books and post them in a list. Here are five of my favorites.

Thing 26- Play week

I searched around the web and found a nifty image generator. Of all the ones I found, this one turned out to be my favorite. It lets you create speech blurbs for some celebrities and politicians. Here's the link:

Thing 25- Thoughts about Podcasts and Video

I visited Arizona State University's Library Channel. I was able to get to their news, podcasts, and videos quickly and easily. Going through their archives was a bit confusing, however. I think that websites like this are the best way to deliver the service or product to the library customer.

Thing 24- Locating podcasts

In Thing 24, I subcribed to an RSS feed on my Bloglines account. I went to Odeo's Studio to find the feed. I found out what Odeo's Studio is all about, it lets you upload your own music to the site for others to listen to. They can then give feedback as to whether they like it or not.

Thing 23- You-Tube Videos

I liked how YouTube lets you see a wide variety of videos, from original creations to clips from TV shows. I chose the video that I did because it is spot-on when addressing the things babysitters need to do to be successful.

Thing 22- Flickr mashups

My favorite Flickr mashup is Montagr. This mashup lets you create a photo mosaic based on photos found from Flickr. It's interesting to think of all the possible mosaics that users can put together using this mashup.

Thing 21-Tagging

Tagging allows users to share photos with everyone in many different ways. It is important because without them, users would not be able to share photos effectively. Community develops on Flickr by users posting comments about a photo and sharing their own photos.

Thing 20- using Flickr

My Flickr experience was full of intrigue. I had a good time looking through the various images posted. Here's a nice image that I found:

Thing 19- Web 2.0 award winners

The thing I liked about the Web 2.0 awards list was that it allows you to find just the award winning sites using a short list. The site allowed you to create blogs in no time. I could see libraries using this site to create effective blogs and subscribe to blogs from other library systems.

Technorati

In Technorati, searching for the keyword "Learning 2.0" in each of the three venues brought up different results. The thing that surprised me the most was the fact that two of the current most popular searches were for Paris Hilton and John McCain. This surprises me because I didn't know two individual people could attract so much attention over a long period of time.

Del.icio.us

I had a pretty fun time taking the del.icio.us tour and clicking on the appropriate bookmarks. I think that this tool is a helpful way to get categories sorted according to your favorite ones. It looks to be a time-saving measure when you want to quickly find a social contact.

About MySpace

MySpace looks like an easy social networking site to use. I feel safe when viewing my MySpace profile or anyone else's. My opinion of MySpace did not alter after the tour. MySpace is so popular with so many people because it allows one to communicate using a wide range of mediums, such as text and pictures. I already have a MySpace set up, so of course I have wanted to try it.

411 on Social Networking

I think that the VBPL should use a networking site to connect with teens. It would help its' image among teens as well as be a safe friend for them to have. It could be a good way to showcase the fun events that VBPL has to offer.

Reader's Advisory wiki

In thing 14, I posted a favorite book in the Staff Picks! section. Adding my comments and editing the page was easy. Other library groups can use wikis to share opinions with one another and develop new concepts among themselves.

Wikis

In thing 13, I learned what wikis are. I found the type of information found on the average wiki to be interesting. Libraries can use wikis to seek customer input on certain topics and to make customers aware of new happenings at their library.

IM and Reference at the library

I think that IM and reference are a good mix at the library. Staffers can use IM to quickly reply to reference questions asked from a distance, as well as answer presented questions at a later time.

IM and Libraries

Libraries should use IM to relay important information to customers and within their staff. IM is different than traditional communication channels by the parties being able to know if the peer is available or not. It also allows for easy collaboration. Most of our customers are regular IM users, so it would be helpful to know what their favorite way to communicate is in order to effectively relay information to them.

Thing 10

In thing 10, I located a few useful library blogs. To me, the easiest method of finding feeds was Technorati. It is also my favorite method because it has a nice, convenient design with everything spaced clearly on the page. Syndic8 was the most confusing one to use because it doesn't have any pictures or vivid graphics. It was mostly text. I found a news feed on Topix that was all about the latest happenings with Starbucks Coffee worldwide.

RSS and Newsreaders

In Thing 9, I learned how to use RSS feeds and newsreaders. I had fun learning how to put many different RSS feeds on your Bloglines account. What I like about RSS feeds and newsreaders is that they allow you to view all of your favorite information sources and web pages without being bombarded by advertisements. I might be able to use RSS to view what's going in the news and any work-related information. The advantages of using an RSS reader are that they conveniently display all of your favorite web sites in one place & you don't have to waste time viewing each individual site. Plus, the information on each page you have viewed is stored for future reference. However, the disadvantages of using an RSS reader are that advertisers can't make you aware of things that they are trying to sell & most people still don't know how to use one yet.
